Keikis For Keiko
Get your students involved in marine conservation and legislative efforts to better protect the ocean and its inhabitants! It's legislative season and there are so many bills that will directly affect the next generation of adults. They deserve to have a say in them! We are hopeful that this year we will help put stronger regulations on single-use plastic, polystyrene foam, shark fishing, and the aquarium trade in Hawaii. If you'd like to encourage your students to speak up and participate read below!
JOIN OUR E-MAIL LIST:
There is only a few days notice before each hearing and testimony has to be submitted 24 hours before the hearing starts. Sign up for this e-mail list and we'll send you an e-mail alert every time a hearing for one of these bills is scheduled so you have the maximum amount of time to get your class involved!
TALK TO YOUR KIDS:
We encourage you to tell your class about the issue at hand and why this legislation is being proposed. We'll attach a few links to useful materials on the topic with each e-mail alert that you are welcome to use!
ENCOURAGE THEM TO SPEAK UP:
Your students can write a short letter to legislators on whether or not they support the bill and why. Since there probably won't be enough time to mail them (unless you live in Hawaii), you can snap photos of the letters or scan them. Send them to our e-mail at and we'll make sure they're shown to legislators during the hearing.
We try to live stream all of the hearings but don't worry if you can't watch it. We'll make sure to send you an update on the result of the hearing so you can share the news with your kids!
